Warning: spoilers ahead for episode 1 of Marvel’s What If…?
With the release date of new Marvel series What If…? finally here, the first episode of the show on Disney Plus saw fans reunite with several MCU faves, including Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) and Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan).
However, viewers were left aghast by a reference to Bucky’s heartbreaking past – or future – as the Winter Soldier, when he and the Howling Commandos joined super soldier Captain Carter on a treacherous mission.
In the first Captain America film, Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), who has become Captain America, is distraught when his best friend Bucky falls from a train to his apparent death.
However, in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, it’s revealed that not only did Bucky survive the fall, losing an arm in the process, but he was also recaptured by Hydra, brainwashed into becoming an assassin called the Winter Soldier and cryogenically frozen throughout the decades.
Considering the first episode of What If…? sees Peggy, rather than Steve, become an enhanced super soldier, it’s unclear whether Bucky could end up going down a similar path to become the Winter Soldier in future.

Nonetheless, his tale does unfold differently in the series, as just as it seems that viewers might watch him fall from the train once again, Captain Carter catches him and pulls him back onto the vehicle.
‘You almost ripped my arm off,’ Bucky tells Peggy, a line that left some What If…? fans in utter shock, due to the painful reminder of Bucky originally losing his arm.
‘When Bucky said “you almost ripped my arm off” I nearly cried,’ one fan tweeted after watching the first episode.
‘Not Bucky’s “almost ripped off my arm there” too soon Marvel,’ another remarked.
‘The way I gasped,’ someone said as they shared a screenshot of the on-the-nose exchange.
Several fans expressed how much they loved seeing Bucky reunite with Steve, speculating whether Bucky not falling for the train means that he lived a happy life, rather than one that involved him becoming a brainwashed assassin.
However, clips from the What If…? trailer have shown Bucky as he looked in the future as the Winter Soldier, so it’ll be curious to see if his story ends up inevitably going down a similar path.
What If…? features several of the original MCU actors reprising their roles, lending their vocal talents to the Disney Plus show.
However, some characters, including Steve, Tony Stark, Captain Marvel and Black Widow, have been voiced by new actors, meaning that Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr, Brie Larson and Scarlett Johansson are not a part of the production.
What If…? returns next Wednesday on Disney Plus.
