Warning: spoilers ahead for episode 3 of Marvel series What If…?
While many of the characters who appear in the new Marvel series What If…? on Disney Plus are voiced by the original MCU actors, Black Widow is not one of them, with Scarlett Johansson notably absent from the show amid her fallout with Disney.
Nonetheless, fans have been sharing their amazement over the portrayal of Natasha Romanoff in episode 3, as the S.H.I.E.L.D. agent tries to uncover who is killing the Avengers one by one.
In the third instalment of the animated adventure, Black Widow is framed for the murder of Tony Stark (Mark Wingert) when she injects Iron Man with a serum that’s supposed to save his life, but ends up with him dead on the floor.
After being arrested, she’s placed in the back of a vehicle filled with S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, who she’s able to overcome easily with jabbing punches and perfectly placed kicks because, well, she’s the legendary Black Widow.
Natasha ends up being the one who gets to the bottom of the mystery of the murdered Avengers, signalling to Nick Fury (Samuel L Jackson) that it all centres around the death of Hope van Dyne, the daughter of the culprit Hank Pym (Michael Douglas).

Black Widow’s fighting prowess and impressive sleuthing skills amazed viewers watching the episode, many of whom also praised voice actor Lake Bell for her depiction of the character in the series.
What If…? director Bryan Andrews recently told Uproxx that some MCU actors were unable to voice their characters in the show due to scheduling conflicts.
One fan remarked on Twitter that in their opinion, this is the ‘best I’ve seen Black Widow’ in the MCU.
Another celebrated the fact that Black Widow is a ‘vocal point’ of the episode, saying it’s ‘amazing’ that she ‘kicks so much butt’.
Several viewers pointed out that Natasha’s iconic superhero landing harks back to the recently-released Black Widow movie, when Florence Pugh’s character Yelena Belova pokes fun at her and calls her a ‘poser’.
‘It’s not really Black Widow is she doesn’t do the pose,’ one person said.
‘Natasha Romanoff’s black widow pose…. some things never change, no matter what universe,’ another remarked.
Scarlett recently claimed that Disney breached her contract over the film Black Widow by releasing the blockbuster simultaneously on Disney Plus and in cinemas.
She claims this decision damaged her earning potential as a large part of her salary is based on the film’s box office performance, which dropped 67% after the film’s opening weekend.
Following her lawsuit, Disney issued a statement, saying there was ‘no merit whatsoever’ to it and that the company had ‘fully complied’ with her contract.
The firm went on to file a motion to force the actor into a private arbitration.
What If…? is available to watch on Disney Plus with new episodes released on Wednesdays.
