Matt Lucas Kicks Off His Bake Off Presenting Job With a Hilarious Boris Johnson Impersonation

ICYMI: The Great British Bake Off returned to our TVs last night and, boy, are we grateful. We’ve missed the technical bake drama, the showstopper stress, and course, the short preshow sketches. Matt Lucas kicked off his new role as Bake Off copresenter with a cracking spoof where he hilariously impersonated Prime Minister Boris Johnson. If for some (frankly criminal) reason you didn’t watch the show live, here’s what you missed.

Lucas opened the sketch with the familiar 2020 coronavirus briefing setup, complete with Union Jack flags and a redesigned GBBO slogan, “Stay Alert, Protect Cake, Save Loaves” (and of course a Borisesque blond wig and a suit). Stumbling over his words, Lucas opened his parody address to GBBO fans, “if you must bake in a tent, bake in a tent. But please don’t bake in a tent.”

Next, the other stars of the show were introduced. Lucas handed it over to copresenter Noel (or as he’s referred to, Noelle) who asked the expert panel (Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood) whether our favourite afternoon tea treat is pronounced “sc-oh-ne or sc-on”. Leith replied “sc-oh-ne”, and Hollywood replied “sc-on”, which Lucas concluded, “right, well I hope that clears things up for you,” poking fun at the ever-changing messages given to the British public.

The timing of the broadcast was even more perfect thanks to a 15-minute delayed start time due to Johnson’s address to the nation, confirming the announcement of stricter rules being imposed to help slow the rise in COVID-19 cases.

Nothing beats watching the full one-minute clip, so do yourselves a favour and have a chuckle at Lucas’s first Great British Bake Off sketch.
