Maureen Lipman quits Celebrity Gogglebox as she calls out editing of Channel 4 show

Dame Maureen Lipman has explained why she won’t be returning to Celebrity Gogglebox, claiming that the show was edited to cut out the ‘clever things’ that she and friend Gyles Brandreth said.

Since 2020, Maureen, 75, has made several appearances on the Channel 4 programme, which films people as they react to TV series and films, such as the news or the latest episodes of popular dramas.

In June this year, the Coronation Street actor revealed that she walked off set after watching Naked Attraction, admitting that she believed the celebrity iteration of Gogglebox would be more ‘grown-up’ than the usual version.

During a recent appearance on Loose Women, she stated that she’s ‘seen all the male tackle that I need to see for this lifetime’, as she revealed why she won’t be making a return.

When asked by Janet Street-Porter whether she’s going to be on the series anymore, Maureen said that she felt that she’s ‘run through her period’ of delivering shocked reactions to TV clips.

‘Gyles loves it. He absolutely loves it, and we had such a good time, but none of the clever things we said went into it, just “Ooh!” went into it, so no,’ she added.

Last month, Maureen was made Corrie’s very first Dame, receiving the honour from Prince Charles during an Investiture Ceremony in Windsor.

As she was made a Dame Commander for services to charity, entertainment and the arts, she said: ‘It’s been a long time coming. I heard about it in 2020 and then I couldn’t collect it. And so the coat you bought becomes like something you don’t want to wear.’

While Maureen may have become exasperated with being made to look at male genitalia on Gogglebox, viewers recently criticised the show for showing a ‘traumatising’ episode of a TV programme that captured a baby kangaroo being killed.

‘Getting fed up of animals being killed or eaten with no warning!!!! It’s not entertainment,’ one person tweeted in response to the clip.

‘Gogglebox is literally awful nowadays. I remember when it used to be funny and you’d have a laugh watching it. Now it’s just animals dying and politics!’ another remarked.

Loose Women airs weekdays from 12.30pm on ITV.
