Michael McIntyre’s American remake of The Wheel has bombed worldwide.
The comedian devised the show, which features a variety of notable names assisting three hopeful participants who take turns answering questions on various themes.
The celebrities are all supposed to be experts on various areas, and after the category is chosen, they are spun around and, hopefully, the wheel will select a celebrity expert to assist answer the issue.
While the programme was a big success in the United Kingdom, it was not as successful in the United States, leading to its discontinuation.
A source shared: ‘The channel also booked some major US celebrities like Christina Ricci, Ricki Lake and Tony Hawk. But sadly it just did not capture the imagination of audiences.’
‘American fans did not warm to the show or the contest,’ the insider added to The Sun.
A senior source at NBC told the publication: ‘The Wheel is not returning.’
During the COVID-19 lockdown, Michael came up with the concept for the show, and the comic previously said that he had to audition for his role on the show.
‘It was a really mean thing,’ said the 47-year-old celebrity, who debuted the game show in 2020. ‘The Americans instantly purchased the show on Zoom in lockdown.’
‘Everyone seemed to want it after it had been on for one or two weeks here, it was crazy.
‘I’ve got all these Americans going, ‘We love the show’. And then they said yes, they wanted to buy it. It was amazing.’
Before the show aired, a TV insider shared: ‘Americans love an eccentric Brit, which is why they’ve lapped up the likes of Gordon Ramsay and James Corden.
‘But they also love a good gameshow with a simple concept – and The Wheel has the added bonus of being one of the Covid friendly shows because the set up socially distances everyone taking part.’
The Wheel continues Saturday on BBC One.
