Michelle Heaton ‘nervous’ as she prepares for first sober Christmas with family after eight months without alcohol

Michelle Heaton has spoken about her journey with sobriety, admitting she is ‘nervous’ as she prepares for her first Christmas without alcohol.

The former former Liberty X star has been open about her battle with alcoholism in 2021, after previously sharing photos of herself at the height of her addiction in order to encourage others to seek help and see that recovery is possible.

Michelle had entered rehab in April after finding her drinking increased in lockdown, and has kept her followers up to date with her recovery after completing treatment.

Now, appearing on ITV’s Lorraine, Michelle had another update ahead of the festive period.

Michelle said: ‘I’m almost eight months sober and I’m coming into celebrating Christmas for the first time without an alcoholic drink in my hand.

‘I’m really excited and a little bit nervous. I’m really excited to understand how others keep the joy in their lives without alcohol this year.’

She continued: ‘The last eight months have been a real journey of sobriety, but I’m so happy I can’t even explain how joyful I feel. I couldn’t get to eight hours without picking up the drink towards the end, and here I am almost eight months clean and sober.’

Michelle, 42, previously bravely posted the shocking images, which saw her with her eyes closed in bed with her hair dishevelled, and another with a severely swollen face, compared with two photos of her looking happy and healthy with her family after seeking help.

She told her followers that she had waited to hear the government’s plan to tackle addiction before writing her post, explaining: ‘I’m so pleased to hear of the extra treatment places, they are sorely needed.

‘I’ll be honest – I didn’t have the money to get help, friends and family lent me that and I possibly wouldn’t be here now had they not as I needed the treatment within days.

She says her recovery is a ‘second chance at life’ and has shared heartbreaking photos of herself during the lowest points to shock others into seeing the reality of addiction and encourage them to seek help.

Lorraine airs on weekdays at 9am on ITV.
