Michiel Huisman has said that he ‘dreaded’ going to set to the set of upcoming dramaAngela Black to film the its dark domestic abuse scenes.
The Dutch actor, who is known role in The Flight Attendant and Game of Thrones, appears alongside Joanne Froggatt in the hard hitting ITV series.
The programme follows Angela (Joanne), a woman with a seemingly idyllic home life and charismatic husband Olivier (played by Michiel). However, it’s not long before the viewer sees through the façade and discovers that Angela is also the victim of domestic abuse.
Some of the scenes make for tough viewing, and joint lead Michiel admitted that they took its toll on him during filming.
Speaking to Metro.co.uk and other gathered press, the actor said: ‘There were days that I was dreading it a bit. I thought “Oh, my God, we’re gonna do this horrible scene.”’
The actor also discussed the process he underwent to make the abusive character more three dimensional.‘The challenge for me was to understand why he would do that. Only then I could play it. Even when you’re playing a character who turns out to be a horrible guy like Olivier, I need to sympathize with this guy, I need to understand him. So that was my challenge.’
The series also stars Samuel Adewunmi (The Last Tree, Doctor Who) and is written by Harry and Jack Williams – the creative minds behind The Missing and One of Us.
Actress Joanna also spoke about her approach to the drama, and the responsibility she felt towards real life victims.
‘I did a lot of research. Women’s Aid were incredible in supporting us and pointing me in the right direction with research material,’ she said.
‘It’s so intimate and personal, and the emotions that go along with all of these situations, whether they be more psychological or physical. Obviously, everyone’s situation is very individual to them, but the bravery it takes to talk about those intimate emotions and the emotions of feeling shame.’
Angela Black is set to air on ITV next month
