MSNBC anchor Rachel Maddow made a plea to viewers on Thursday night during her emotional return to her show.
The Rachel Maddow Show host explained she had been away from work due to the serious turn her partner Susan Mikula’s battle with coronavirus had taken.
Rachel – who has been with Susan for 21 years – urged viewers to take the disease seriously as she explained there had been a point when she thought her partner was going to die.
She explained: ‘My relationship with Susan is the only thing at the end of the day that I would kill or die for without hesitation. And Susan has been sick with Covid these past couple of weeks.

‘And at one point we really thought that there was a possibility that it might kill her and that’s why I’ve been away.’
Rachel admitted she had been growing frustrated with social distancing and the way safety measures had been interrupting life, before the virus took hold of her partner.
She told viewers: ‘Whatever you have calculated into your life as acceptable risk.
‘As, you know, inevitable risk, you know, something that you’re willing to go through in terms of this virus because statistically, hey, probably it will be fine for you and your loved ones, I’m just here to tell you to recalibrate that.’
Rachel continued: ‘Whoever you most love and most care for and most cherish in the world. That’s the person who you may lose or who you may spend weeks up all night freaking out about and calling doctors all over the place and over and over again all night long trying to figure out how to keep that person breathing and out of the hospital.’
She urged viewers to be more vigilant about the dangers of the disease and to exercise more caution as the world battles the pandemic.
Her heartfelt message immediately drew a positive response from fans as one wrote: ‘For all the lights and cameras, the people on TV are still… people. A reminder of that tonight with a raw and poignant plea by Rachel Maddow. Do everything you can to not get this virus. Rachel, my thoughts are with you and Susan.’
‘If the humanity shown by @maddow talking about Susan’s COVID infection doesn’t grab you in the heart AND make you take this pandemic seriously you’re beyond reach,’ another added.
One commented: ‘Hearing Rachel #Maddow talk about Susan and their experience with Coronavirus gripped my soul. If you didn’t feel anything from that, you are in no way anyone I’d want to ever know or talk to.’
