Munya Chawawa reveals incredible round-up of the best TV moments of 2020

Munya Chawawa’s TikTok videos single-handedly made lockdown bearable over the summer, and now the viral star has released a hilarious end of year round-up.

The comedian has created an inspired new video as part of the Edinburgh TV awards, looking back at the best telly moments from the past 12 months.

In character as a BBC News announcer, Munya casts his satirical eye over the past year, starting with Emily Maitlis’s infamous ‘I can’t sweat’ interview with Princess Andrew from last November.

Fast forwarding to March, Munya looks back at the first lockdown announcement, before focusing on Coronation Street and Emmerdale’s return to air, the launch of Disney+ and Michaela Coel’s brilliant I May Destroy You.

 

Elsewhere, there’s love for Normal People, which is described as the most watched show during lockdown. Joe Exotic also appears in the recap, with Munya describing him as ‘the man David Attenborough would be if he had a mullet and nipple piercings’.

Finally, the video takes a closer look at Diversity’s BLM routine, which he joked featured ‘anti-white body popping’.

It comes after the winners of the Edinburgh TV awards were announced earlier today, with Chernobyl and Succession the big winners.

Munya has emerged as one of the viral stars of 2020, releasing sketches on everything from Black Lives Matter to Stormzy and Chip’s beef.

He previously told Metro.co.uk of his success: ‘It’s this bizarre disbelief, of having done something so good that people from all walks of life have recognised it and have acknowledged that it’s something that brings them joy.’

His latest video focuses on the ridiculous backlash to the recent Sainsbury’s Christmas advert. The clip takes down those criticising the supermarket for featuring a black family in their new ad, and it’s earned a legion of celebrity fans. John Boyega and Strictly Come Dancing’s Clara Amfo are among those sharing the video with their followers.

 

Speaking to Metro.co.uk about the clip, Munya said: ‘The sketch was very much a summary of 2020 for me really. It seems like this year, whatever progress we’ve made towards some form of racial equality, people have had something negative to say.

‘We saw it with the Black Lives Matter protests, the Diversity performance on BGT and now a Christmas advert about gravy!’
