NBCUniversal has issued an apology after a scene in Saved By The Bell appeared to mock Selena Gomez’s kidney transplant.
The 28-year-old singer underwent life-changing surgery in 2017 over her battle with lupus – with her friend Francia Raisa donating a kidney.
Fans were left fuming after they saw the sixth episode of the rebooted show, titled Teen-Line, referenced Selena’s illness, prompting a response from the studio.
‘We apologise,’ NBCUniversal said in a statement, alongside its streaming service Peacock and the show’s executive producers. ‘It was never our intention to make light of Selena’s health.
‘We have been in touch with her team and will be making a donation to her charity, The Selena Gomez Fund for Lupus Research at USC.’
In the episode, Bayside High students argued about who Selena’s donor was, despite it being publicly known that it was Francia.
‘I know for a fact that Selena Gomez’s kidney donor was Justin Bieber’s mum,’ one said during the row.‘God I wish that I had my phone so I could prove it.’
‘Prove what? That you’re an idiot,’ the other spat back. ‘It was Demi Lovato’s kidney. They’re best friends like you and I were.’
In the same scene, graffiti could be seen in the background of Bayside High, with the question: ‘Does Selena Gomez even have kidneys?’ written in black spray paint.
Many viewers were offended by the events at hand and complained on social media.
‘Saved by the Bell, that’s disgusting,’ slammed one. ‘Selena almost lost her life, jokes about her kidney transplant is NOT FUNNY. Respect Selena Gomez.’
‘RESPECT SELENA GOMEZ. BOYCOTT SAVED BY THE BELL,’ another penned.
Selena has yet to comment on the scenes.
Saved By The Bell is available to stream on Peacock.
