Ncuti Gatwa is embarking on one of the most important jobs on television, and the next Doctor Who actor has revealed how long we could see him in character.
It’s been little over a year since the Sex Education star was named as the next 14th Doctor on the famous BBC sci-fi series, which he will replace Jodie Whittaker on.
Ncuti, 30, stated at the time that he was “truly honoured, beyond delighted, and a little bit afraid” to have been cast, but that he would “manage the unique duty and honour with the utmost care.”
He’s now teased followers about how long he’s already signed up for.
Ncuti has expressed his wish to return to theatre work at some time, and he has stated how much playing on stage means to him.
‘It kept me warm and it held me all night, even if I was broke,’ he said.
‘But I’m planning on getting back to it next year, after I finish season two of Doctor Who,’ he added, confirming he would be playing the Time Lord for at least two seasons.
During the same interview with Rolling Stone, Ncuti admitted that he wasn’t a massive fan of the show, but before auditioning for the part he decided to watch every single episode since its 2005 revival, after which he emerged a die-hard Whovian.
‘I fell in love with it. When you watch it, you forget all your troubles,’ he shared.
‘You go to space, or to another time. You have adventures.’
He also stated that his version of the character would be “emotionally fragile,” and that while he covered such attributes with comedy, he was “lonely.”
While Ncuti has yet to appear on screen in any Doctor Who episodes, he was named the most powerful person on British television earlier this year.
Ncuti topped the RadioTimes.com TV 100 power list, a designation he described as “bloody magnificent.”
Doctor Who will premiere exclusively on the BBC in the UK and Ireland and on Disney Plus internationally.
