Fans of a highly successful TV programme that recently debuted on Netflix are expecting for an impending season 2 announcement, but there’s a major roadblock to clear before.
The Gentlemen, directed by Guy Ritchie and starring Theo James, Kaya Scodelario, Joely Richardson, Vinnie Jones, and Ray Winstone, premiered on the streaming site in March of this year.
The action comedy, a spin-off of the 2019 film of the same name, allegedly received an amazing 215 million viewing hours in its first two weeks, making it the most-watched series on any platform between March 14 and March 20.
In its first four weeks on the site, the exhilarating movie reportedly had 44 million views.
Netflix executives have not stated that they are ‘eager’ to launch a second season of the programme in order to sustain its huge popularity.
However, they have a stumbling block since they would want Guy to return as director, along with numerous original cast members.
‘It’s going to be quite a challenge getting the same actors back together, but Netflix chiefs are keen for a sequel,’ an insider told The Sun.
‘Another hurdle will be securing Guy for the series as he already has several movie projects in the pipeline this year.’
The source added: ‘But the success of series one has already convinced them there’s huge potential for a follow-up.’
The Gentlemen film, released five years ago, starred Mattew McConaughey, Hugh Grant, Michelle Dockery, and Colin Farrell.
Theo, who plays Edward ‘Eddie’ Horniman in the forthcoming TV spin-off, recently discussed his experience working with Guy as director.
‘It was a bit of an odyssey because, you know, there’s the Guy of it, ‘he told The Guardian.
‘You either give in or… it’s going to end badly for you! He has the script, and the story, but then, on the day, it’s completely rewritten in the room. The first couple of days, it’s a little bit of shock and awe.’
The Gentlemen is available to watch on Netflix.
