Netflix US December 2020: Best new shows and films including Bridgerton and The Midnight Sky

My Celebrity Life –

There is plenty of great content heading to Netflix in the final month of the year (Picture: Netflix)

Netflix is ending the year with a bang as they deliver the last of their original TV shows and movies this month.

Naturally, December brings a multitude of Christmas content such as The Holiday Movies That Made, Christmas Crossfire and A California Christmas.

However, there is plenty of non-Christmas treats in store as well including George Clooney’s The Midnight Sky and Shonaland’s Bridgerton series.

So here are some of the best new releases coming to the streaming service in December.

Mank (December 4)

The new film from David Fincher is a black and white style look at classic Hollywood.

It focuses on the story behind the making of Citizen Kane, specifically how the screenplay co-written by Gary Oldman’s Herman J. Mankiewicz (the eponymous Mank) came to be.

It’s already expected to get plenty of nominations during award season so it’s not one to miss.

The Prom (December 11)

Ryan Murphy once again brings a star-studded project to the small screen with his Broadway adaptation.

The glitzy, feel-good musical boasts a cast including Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman, Andrew Rannells and James Corden.

It tells the story of a high schooler who wants to take her girlfriend to prom against a ban from the head of the PTA – and with the help of some stage stars trying to boost their ailing careers.

Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom (December 18)

The late Chadwick Boseman appears in his last leading role with Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.

The film, co-produced by Denzel Washington, takes place over one afternoon, and sees Ma Rainey, a legendary blues singer, in a battle with her manager – while Chadwick’s character Levee tries to fulfill his ambitions.

Viola Davis plays the titular character in this adaptation of August Wilson’s stage play and both she and Chadwick are expected to get Oscar nominations for their part.

The Midnight Sky (December 23)

Based on the novel Good Morning, Midnight by Lily Brooks-Dalton, George directs and stars in the new sci-fi movie following a Nasa crew in 2049.

The film follows the crew as they discover a habitable moon around Jupiter while learning the Earth has gone through a global catastrophe.

George stars as Augustine, a heavily-bearded, lonely scientist in the Arctic, one of the world’s only survivors.

The sci-fi film also star Felicity Jones, David Oyelowo and Kyle Chandler.

Bridgerton (December 25)

The Shondaland adaptation series follows Daphne Bridgerton, played by Phoebe Dynevor, the eldest daughter of the powerful Bridgerton family as she makes her debut on Regency London’s competitive marriage market.

Although it initially appears she has a wealth of options, her brother begins to rule out her potential suitors, prompting the high society scandal sheet written by the mysterious Lady Whistledown (voiced by Dame Julie Andrews) to cast aspersions on Daphne.

However sparks fly between Daphne and the rebellious Duke of Hastings, played by Rege-Jean Page, and they find themselves engaged in an increasing battle of wits while navigating society’s expectations for their future.

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina: Part 4 (December 31)

The final season of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, dubbed ‘Part 4’, will feature the final eight episodes of the series.

And with episode names including ‘The Elderitch Dark’, ‘Deus Ex Machina’ and ‘At the Mountains of Madness’, we reckon it’s going to pack a serious punch.

Kiernan Shipka, who previously found fame as Don Draper’s daughter on hit series Mad Men, teased the upcoming final season on Instagram, sharing a photo of herself wearing a blood-red ensemble with a bridal veil.
