Nine Perfect Strangers star Samara Weaving has recalled having to do a read-through for an audition for Fifty Shades of Grey with her dad… and we can’t imagine anything more excruciating.
Samara, 29, has led an extremely varied acting career, starring in productions including Home and Away, Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins, Bill & Ted Face the Music and The Babysitter: Killer Queen.
One of her latest roles is in Nicole Kidman’s new TV series Nine Perfect Strangers as Jessica Chandler, an influencer absorbed by appearances who goes to a mysterious health retreat to try and fix her marriage.
During a recent interview, the Australian actor recollected an audition she once did for Fifty Shades of Grey, which required making a self tape.
‘I had to do a self-tape of a very explicit scene where two women are talking about having sex with men,’ she told Cosmopolitan.
Samara explained that she was staying in a small town in Australia with her parents at the time, and so had to ask them to help her out by reading the scene with her.

As Samara’s mum couldn’t bring herself to do it, her dad ended up being the one to bite the bullet.
‘It was so embarrassing, and my mum couldn’t do it. My dad was like, “C’mon, let’s get into it” and was really acting and performing,’ she said.
‘And I had to be like, “No, just read the lines. Don’t make eye contact with me. Let’s just suffer through it.” I didn’t get the role.’
Nine Perfect Strangers is based on the book of the same name by Big Little Lies author Liane Moriarty.
Nicole stars in the show as Masha Dmitrichenko, the founder of a wellness resort called Tranquillum House who’s as charming as she is unnerving.
In addition to Nicole and Samara, other stars in the series include Melissa McCarthy, Bobby Cannavale, Luke Evans, Michael Shannon and Regina Hall.
During a recent interview with Metro.co.uk and other press, Samara outlined meeting Nicole for the first time while she was in character as Masha.
Looking back on their first meeting during filming, Samara said: ‘I was just aghast, looking at her and just soaking her in. It was amazing. No acting required in that scene.’
Nine Perfect Strangers is available to watch on Amazon Prime Video.
