No, Michaela Coel’s I May Destroy You isn’t returning for a second series

Michaela Coel’s I May Destroy You won’t be returning for a second series, according to HBO’s Chief Content Officer, Casey Bloys.

The landmark 12-part drama, which was recently snubbed at the upcoming Golden Globes by not receiving a single nomination, followed Arabella (played by Michaela Coel) as she dealt with the trauma of being sexually assaulted.

While cast member Harriet Webb previously told Metro.co.uk she’d be surprised if the show made a comeback, it seems all hope of another chapter has officially been quashed.

‘Michaela Coel is thinking about what she wants to do next,’ Bloys told The Hollywood Reporter.

‘I don’t think there’s going to be another I May Destroy You, there’s no season two coming. But she’s thinking about what she wants to do next and hopefully, we’ll be lucky enough to be partner with her again.’

I May Destroy You topped many lists as one of the best shows of 2020, alongside the likes of Normal People.

Coel revealed that the BBC didn’t censor any of the explicit sex and drugs scenes or heady discussions of sexual assault.

Overall, she said, the public broadcaster was fully committed to bringing her uncompromising vision to life.

‘There was no pushback,’ Coel shared.

In July, Coel said that she was already plotting her next project.

‘There might be a little something on my mind,’ Coel told the Obsessed With… podcast.

‘It is in the back of my mind and I keep telling this idea to wait because we’ve got to finish giving birth to I May Destroy You before I start thinking about having other children!’

I May Destroy You is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
