The release date of Star Wars series Obi-Wan Kenobi is inching ever closer, with a newly-released trailer teasing the reintroduction of Hayden Christensen as Darth Vader.
The new footage of the show, which is set to come out on Disney Plus, has left fans brimming with excitement, with nods to the young Luke Skywalker, the return of Jedi Obi-Wan (Ewan McGregor) and the live-action debut of the Grand Inquisitor, who boasts a spinning lightsaber.
A lot of mystery continues to surround the series, which is set 10 years after the third film in the prequel trilogy, Revenge of the Sith.
However, some Star Wars fans may have a stronger idea of what to expect, having met the Grand Inquisitor before in the animated TV releases.
So who is he and who plays him?
Who is the Grand Inquisitor?
The Grand Inquisitor in Obi-Wan Kenobi is the highest-ranking Inquisitor of the Galactic Empire, and is one of the show’s main antagonists, alongside Inquisitor Reva (Moses Ingram) and Darth Vader.
The Grand Inquisitor reports directly to Darth Vader, having previously been a Jedi Knight himself before defecting.
Star Wars fans familiar with the animated series will already have seen the character depicted on screen, having appeared in Star Wars: Rebels and as a Jedi Temple guard in Star Wars: Clone Wars.
After he succumbed to the dark side, he made it his mission to hunt down other Jedi, thus gaining the moniker ‘Jedi Hunter’.
The Galactic Empire’s Inquisitors are all Force-sensitive, which they use to their advantage when seeking out those of the same order as Kenobi.
Who plays the Grand Inquisitor?
The Grand Inquisitor is being played in Obi-Wan Kenobi by Rupert Friend, who looks unrecognisable in the first glimpses fans have seen of the character in the teaser trailers.
Some of his best-known previous works include starring in Pride and Prejudice, The Young Victoria, Homeland and more recently Anatomy of a Scandal.
In the animated show Star Wars: Rebels, the Grand Inquisitor was voiced by Harry Potter star Jason Isaacs.
Jason previously expressed interest in reprising the role in a live-action capacity before Rupert’s casting was announcing, telling Collider: ‘I have the coolest wand in the Harry Potter world and I have the cool lightsaber in the Star Wars world.’
When is Obi-Wan Kenobi released?
The release date for Obi-Wan Kenobi arrives on Friday May 27, with the first two episodes being made available to watch on the same day.
The following episodes will come out on a weekly basis, with the final, sixth episode airing in late June.
