Many people tuned in to watch Telsa CEO Elon Musk take on the Saturday Night Live hosting slot – a contentious posting to a lot of people – but little did they know he’d roped in partner Grimes for a skit.
Taking to the stage in New York on, er, Saturday night, the SpaceX founder got to share his love of Mars as well as Dogecoin (which he admitted was a ‘hustle’) in a series of sketches, and in spite of the naysayers who weren’t too pleased to have the non-performer/non-sportsman in the hosting slot, he clearly loved his time on the show.
It was a family affair for the tech businessman, too, with his mother, Maye, appearing in the Mother’s Day-themed cold open, and his son’s intriguing name, X Æ A-Xii, also mentioned in his monologue (he joked it was pronounced ‘cat running across the keyboard’).
Not leaving his partner out of the fun, it’s taken a day for a lot of people to realise singer Grimes also popped up in one of the sketches which involved Elon playing computer character Wario.
Wario was on trial for the murder of Mario, with Princess Peach – played by none other than Grimes – appearing in the court, as she stood accused of having an affair with Luigi.
While the star had already said she was going to appear on the show, previously tweeting: ‘Tune into SNL tonight to watch me try acting!’ she blended into scene perfectly and looked to be having a hoot.

Reacting on social media, punters were baffled and thrilled she paid the set a visit.
‘“What if grimes was on SNL and played princess peach?” Is like such a Tumblr thought experiment it’s insane,’ one Twitter-user very accurately mused, as another chimed in following the telecast: ‘Grimes saying “i never touch him under the overalls” is the only funny part of SNL.’
It comes as Elon finally hosted the programme after weeks of sass about his controversial gig, with SNL stars not mincing their words online.
The entrepreneur and one of the world’s richest men said he was making history as the first person with Asperger’s to host – ‘or at least the first person to admit it’.
‘It’s an honour to be hosting Saturday Night Live, I mean that,’ Elon said during his monologue.
‘Sometimes after I say something, I have to say I mean that so people really know I mean it. That’s because I’ve always had a lot of intonational variation when I speak, which I’ve been told makes for great comedy.’
He added: ‘I’m actually making history tonight as the first person with Asperger’s to host SNL. Or at least the first to admit it.’
It’s since been pointed out online that Elon isn’t the first person with Asperger’s to present the show. Previous cast member Dan Aykroyd also has Asperger’s and came back to host in 2003.
