People take issue with Peppa Pig’s promotion of Pride.
Since its debut in 2004, the cartoon show has amassed legions of admirers, but it has recently come under fire for its attempts to promote inclusion.
After uploading a social media message to mark Pride Month, the show was once again the target of some people’s ire.
To acknowledge the celebrations, the official Peppa Pig Instagram account shared a post that said: ‘Happy Pride Month. Here’s to celebrating love.’
The image in the tweet showed Peppa and her family and friends in front of a rainbow, including Penny Polar Bear, who debuted on the programme last year and had two mommies.
While many individuals complimented the programme for continuing to “celebrate LGBTQ+ families,” others chose to bombard the post with hurtful and nasty remarks.
One wrote: ‘Keep pride for adults. Let children be children. It’s complicated for their brains to comprehend such abnormal behaviour.’
‘Not with Peppa,’ someone else said, also sharing a thumbs down emoji, which picked up over 100 likes.
Another added: ‘Why is politics in kids shows?.
Despite the unfavourable feedback, the vast majority of viewers praised the show.
‘Thank you for supporting people being able to be who they are and to be loved for who they are,’ one person said.
‘Thank you so much for celebrating our type of family, it means so much to our children to see characters they enjoy celebrating Pride,’ someone else wrote.
Another added: ‘Thank you for not being afraid of showing support this month.’
The show’s first lesbian pair joined the ensemble in September of last year.
Penny introduced Peppa to her two mothers in the episode Families.
It happened after the children’s programme was dubbed a ‘gay icon’ following the publication of the first Peppa Pig album, which featured the song Rainbow.
Peppa Pig is available to stream on My5.
