Phillip Schofield marks end of Pride month with Holly Willoughby after coming out as gay

This Morning star Phillip Schofield has marked the end of Pride month with his co-star Holly Willoughby, after he came out as gay last year.

The presenters began the show by showing off their progress Pride flag badges, with Holly also wearing a gorgeous rainbow skirt.

‘Well football isn’t the only thing we’re celebrating today, as today is the final day of Pride month and it’s also ITV Pride Day which is why we’ve got our badges on here,’ Phillip explained.

Holly, 40, added: ‘And my subtle skirt. This is the day we celebrate the very best of the LGBT+ community so we thought we’d spread the love with an all-singing, all-dancing music number.’

Phil, 59, also explained what the progress Pride flag is, pointing out the transgender at flag at the side, and the black and brown stripes, which represent marginalised LGBTQ communities of colour.

The pair also welcomed West End star Marisha Wallace, who stunned with a musical performance.

Phillip came out as gay last year, writing in a statement: ‘With the strength and support of my wife and my daughters, I have been coming to terms with the fact that I am gay.’

He went on to say of Holly: ‘My friends are the best, especially Holly, who has been so kind and wise – and who has hugged me as I sobbed on her shoulder. At ITV, I couldn’t hope to work with more wonderful, supportive teams.’

The star concluded: ‘Every day on This Morning, I sit in awe of those we meet who have been brave and open in confronting their truth – so now it’s my turn to share mine.

‘This will probably all come as something as a surprise and I understand, but only by facing this, by being honest, can I hope to find peace in my mind and a way forward.’

He also shared the news on This Morning, sitting alongside his co-stars Holly, Eamonn Holmes, and Ruth Langsford.

More recently, Phillip said in an interview: ‘In a way it’s been perhaps a good thing that I have had time to look at the world and think, “You know, there are much bigger things going on than what’s going in your head.”’

He added to The Times: ‘And also, at the same time, to think how lucky I am to have been able to have worked through all of this [and] to have had the therapy that Holly’s given me all the way through. I have been broadcasting a long time, but I never thought I’d actually broadcast through something like this.’

This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV.
