Phillip Schofield revealed that This Morning almost scrapped a segment about potential new three-metre lockdown restrictions over fears of ‘scaring’ viewers.
On Tuesday’s instalment, Phillip and his co-host Holly Willoughby were discussing the latest headlines with actress Nicola Thorp and radio DJ Nick Ferrari.
During the segment, they talked about the latest claims regarding the government potentially implementing a new three-metre social-distancing rule.
It comes after it was reported that SAGE (Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies), is calling for ‘Covid restrictions measures to be raised from one-metre plus social distancing to three metres’.
‘Now, there’s something else to worry about,’ Phillip began. ‘There’s no proof in this or whether it’s been floated out there to see whether we think it’s a good idea.
‘Essential lie and rumour to worry about, I don’t want any more in my head.’
‘What happens is that SAGE, this is the key committee that advises the government. There are sub-committees that feed into SAGE,’ Nick replied.
‘I’m not justifying it, Phillip. All a journalist needs to do is ring someone who is an advisor to a SAGE sub-committee, who says “We think it could be a good idea that we didn’t leave our homes until Christmas 2025” and you will then see that as a headline.’
‘That is what I sense is happening,’ Nick added.
‘But I agree, what I think will happen is and by the way the government have a lot to answer when this is all over. Phillip, Holly, the media have a few questions to answer when this is all over as well.’
‘I think we have a responsibility here to report things that are based on fact,’ Holly weighed in.
‘People are struggling they don’t need to have their space in their head taken up with anymore. Life is bad enough.’
‘We weren’t going to do this story today,’ Phillip explained.
‘This is not the time to scare people,’ Nick continued. ‘This is a time to tell people we will get through this.’
Despite the rumours, a Downing Street spokesman has denied there are immediate plans to introduce a new three-metre rule.
In a statement released last night, he said: ‘There are no current plans to change social distancing rules. However, everything is kept under review.’
It comes as Boris Johnson warns he will impose tougher lockdown measures ‘if we feel that things are not being properly observed’.
This Morning airs daily at 10am on ITV.
