Piers Morgan congratulates Susanna Reid over explosive Boris Johnson interview: ‘He’ll be heading back to the fridge after that’

Piers Morgan has torn into Boris Johnson after the Prime Minster squirmed through a tense interview with Susanna Reid – his first time on Good Morning Britain since hiding in a fridge.

Back in the lead up to the 2019 general election, Mr Johnson was cornered by Good Morning Britain and instead of answering any questions, he gathered his team and lead them all into a fridge.

Mr Johnson still failed to appear on Good Morning Britain throughout a pandemic, all in all being absent from the show for a total of 1791 days.

Now that Piers is long gone from GMB after quitting in March 2021, Mr Johnson eventually sat down with Susanna despite running late, who did not give him an easy ride.

Immediately, she asked the PM: ‘Are you honest?’

From there it was blow after blow as she put Mr Johnson on the spot over extraordinary cost of living that continues to soar, sexism pouring out of the Conservative Party and, of course, ‘party-gate’.

Watching on from home, Piers congratulated his former co-star on what really was a masterclass in interviewing.

And, naturally, brought up his last encounter with Mr Johnson too.

He tweeted: ‘Boris will be heading back to the fridge after that. Well done Susanna Reid.

‘The Elsie line of attack was lethally effective in exposing his Government’s failure to properly help our most vulnerable people amid soaring inflation.’

It was an uncomfortable interview for Mr Johnson, with Susanna praised by viewers for her immediate take down in her opening lines.

Introducing his interview, she told viewers: ‘This is the interview we have waited 1791 days for, and couldn’t come at a better time.

‘It’s a crucial week as voters prepare to have their say in Thursday’s elections. I’m here live in Downing Street’s study with Boris Johnson before he addresses the Ukrainian parliament, the first world leader to do so since Russia’s invasion, but at home troubles are mounting.

‘There are claims of sexism in Parliament, party-gate investigations continue and there is a rising cost of living crisis. Prime Minister, we have a lot to get through.’

The chat was painful right until the closing moments, when Susanna told viewers Lorraine Kelly would be coming up next with her own show, and Mr Johnson replied: ‘Who’s Lorraine?’

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
