Piers Morgan has paid a moving tribute to Kate Garraway as she spends her first Christmas without her husband Derek Draper.
Earlier this week, Kate revealed she was considering self-isolating with her children Darcey and Billy, so they would be allowed to visit Derek on Christmas Day.
Derek, 53, has been in hospital since March after being admitted with coronavirus and is said to be the UK’s longest case of Covid-19. He is currently free of the virus and in a ‘state of minimal consciousness’.
Speaking on Friday’s pre-recorded Good Morning Britain, Piers and Susanna took a moment to think about all of the people who have struggled or lost a loved one during the coronavirus pandemic.
Reflecting on the incredibly difficult year we have faced, Piers began: ‘Of course, to all of those that have lost loved ones this year, or whose loved ones are seriously ill from the virus.
‘We’re particularly thinking of our colleague Kate, of course, who won’t be with Derek this Christmas. It was always a special time, we know, for the family and our hearts go out to Kate and the kids today.’
‘It will be a very different Christmas for them, obviously and we continue to hope and pray that Derek comes through what’s been a tremendously difficult ordeal for him, obviously, and for his family,’ he added.
It is unclear whether Kate was able to visit her husband today, but last week she expressed her fears that her plans to see Derek over the festive week had been ruined after Boris Johnson introduced tighter restrictions for London and several other areas.
Derek, a former political lobbyist, has been in hospital for nine months. He is now free of the virus but is in a state of minimal consciousness.
‘I’m finding it really challenging, I know it’s the slightly unique position I’m in but it’s also not…,’ Kate explained on GMB.
‘Obviously my dream is for the children and I to see Derek on Christmas Day in some way. The practical challenges with that is we have to keep really safe in order to be able to visit him and isolate. Also, it’s a question of if we are doing that, can we have my mum and dad there?
‘I want to try and avoid, if at all possible, just Darcey, Billy and I on Christmas Day because I think that would make Derek’s absence feel huge and the rest of the family’s absence feel huge. It’s quite a difficult balance to work it all out.’
The I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here star recently revealed that her husband of 15 years briefly opened his eyes in a breakthrough moment.
Good Morning Britain airs daily at 6am on ITV.
