Fans of James Acaster have been more than willing to educate Piers Morgan on who the comedian is after he told Lorraine Kelly off last night for defending the Good Morning Britain host.
James appeared alongside Lorraine on The Last Leg, when Adam Hills asked the morning TV presenter who her hero of 2020 was.
When asked to name a person who had made a big difference over the past 12 months, the television presenter had an unexpected answer: ‘Stay with me on this one – Piers Morgan.’
As soon as she said it, her fellow guest James replied: ‘Go f**k yourself!’
While James’s reaction didn’t frazzle Lorraine in the slightest, Piers (who has been praised by many for his coverage of the pandemic) wanted to take a dig at the comedian as he reacted to the moment today.
Sharing a tweet, Piers thanked Lorraine for her sentiment before bringing up James.
He mused: ‘Who is James Acaster? (genuine question).’
Fortunately for Piers, many a person was willing to step in and praise the comedian as one of the best in the UK at the minute.
One very helpful punter proferred: ‘James Acaster is one of the best comedians in the Country. He isn’t everyone’s cup of tea but he had 4 Netflix Specials and they’re very good!’
That was echoed by another who wrote: ‘Everyone else seems to know who he is, Piers. Find it hard to believe you don’t, actually.’
As one chimed in, noting James is ‘Argubly the finest comedian working in Britain right now,’ another replied: ‘A really good comedian who makes people laugh instead of deliberately pissing people off for a living.’
Piers had his supporters though, with one who also hadn’t been up to date with James’s comedy, writing: ‘Piers, I just looked James Acaster up as I didn’t know who he was either. Apparently, he is a comedian. It just shows you Wikipedia can get some things wrong.’
Still, other followers were also keen to suggest to Piers that he did, in fact, know who James was, after having a Twitter spat with the comedian in 2019 when James was still on Twitter.
Piers was involved in a back and forth with playwright Bola Agbaje, who called him out after he invited 15-year-old Alex Mann onto the show after his performance with grime star Dave at Glastonbury that year and shared a meme suggesting Piers only liked black music when white people performed it.
Wanting to show that wasn’t the case, he shared photos of himself alongside artists Kanye West, Snoop Dogg, Jay-Z and 50 Cent.
James responded: ‘Without googling it name ONE song by each of those artists. Also, shut up.’
Showing Piers knew who he was at the time, he responded, sharing the now-defunct tweet from James, who doesn’t use Twitter: ‘Oh pipe down you virtue-signalling little tw*t. I can’t name ONE funny joke you’ve ever cracked, that’s for sure.’
After James asked whether that was a lyric by ‘snap diggy digg’, Piers replied: ‘That’s hilarious! No wonder you’re on Mock The Week every six months when someone drops out.’
One remembered this moment and wrote: ‘It’s not a genuine question @piersmorgan you had a spat with him back in 2019 and clearly knew who he was!’
Another joined that brigade and reminded Piers: ‘Genuine question yet you have engaged with him past?’
Whether Piers remembers their Twitter back and forth or he’s simply trying to have a dig at the comedian remains to be seen, but one thing’s for sure and that is James’s comments on last night’s programme tickled viewers as they celebrated the New Year.
‘James Acaster telling Lorraine Kelly to ‘go f**k yourself’ is my fav moment of 2020,’ one said, as another added: ‘[The Last Leg] keeping me laughing through a first ever New Years on my ones! James Acaster telling Lorraine Kelly to f**k herself is definitely the highlight.’
