The Powerpuff Girls live action adaptation, while packed with sugar, spice, and everything pleasant, is no longer available.
Plans for a live-action remake of the iconic animation, which initially aired in 1998, were first announced in August 2020.
Bubbles, Buttercup, and Blossom were reportedly ‘disillusioned twenty-somethings’ in the ‘gritty’ projected series.
However, in May of last year, an alleged screenplay from the pilot episode, which was scheduled to be revised, surfaced on social media and was received with widespread criticism.
Now, it looks that the pilot episode reconstruction failed, with The CW in the United States stating that the Powerpuff Girls will not be returning.
The CW president Brad Schwartz told TVLine that the remake has already been returned to the creative team with suggestions for improvement.
Schwartz did, however, give one ray of light to long-time fans of the Cartoon Network cartoon programme who had been waiting for the adaptation.
He said: ‘We’ve already given [the Powerpuff Girls] back to the studios, so they’re free to develop those and sell them anywhere.’
According to Schwartz’s statements, an adaptation is not officially and utterly dead – a new network might start developing the concept shortly.
An initial pilot episode was filmed in 2021 but was not picked up for a full series and garnered harsh criticism when a page of its screenplay leaked online.
At the time, former president at The CW, Mark Pedowitz, said: ‘Sometimes things miss, and this was just a miss. It didn’t feel as rooted in reality as it might have.’
He continued: ‘But again, you learn things when you test things out. And in this case, we felt like, “Let’s take a step back and go back to the drawing board.”‘
The Powerpuff sisters debuted on Cartoon Network in 1998, introducing the three sisters and their father, Professor Utonium.
In brief encounters, the group would face off against archvillain Mojo Jojo and Sara Bellum, the mayor’s deputy, whose entire face is rarely seen.
The Powerpuff Girls is available to buy on Amazon Prime Video.
