Presenter Matt Frei apologises after accidentally signing off Channel 4 News report from BBC News

Presenter Matt Frei has apologised after accidentally signing off a Channel 4 News report from ‘BBC News’.

The journalist had been busy covering Joe Biden’s victory against Donald Trump in the US Election on the ground in Washington DC when he misspoke and named his former employer as he ended his coverage.

‘The question: Who will tell him [Trump] those words that he made famous? Mr President, you’re fired. Matt Frei, BBC News,’ Frei said.

However, Frei immediately recognised his mistake and quickly corrected himself, adding: ‘Channel 4 News, Washington. Good evening.’

Not soon after his report, Frei took to Twitter to acknowledge his error.

‘Apologies to all my C4bosses and viewers,’ he penned. ‘So exhausted long term memory kicking in on day of history… friendly ghosts of BBC past!x.’

It was an easy mistake to make for Frei, who was initially a correspondent at the BBC, where he worked across Europe and Asia. He later became the corporation’s Washington correspondent.

In 2011, it was announced Frei would be switching from the BBC to Channel 4 later in the year.

Frei would serve as the broadcaster’s Washington correspondent for Channel 4 News, as well as reporting for the channel’s other news programmes.

He has since returned often from Washington and has become a semi-regular presenter on Channel 4’s evening news slot.

Viewers were in stitches over Frei’s blunder and rushed to social media to comment.

‘Did @mattfrei just sign off as “Matt Frei, BBC News….uhhh… Channel 4 News…”?’ asked one.

Echoing a similar sentiment, another added: ‘ha ha @mattfrei so caught up in the moment that he signed off from @Channel4News by saying “Matt Frei, BBC News, er, CHANNEL 4 NEWS”.’ (sic)
