Ben Shephard sang Kate Garraway’s praises on today’s Good Morning Britain as she scooped Hello’s inspiration of the year award.
Kate was honoured with the prize in response to how she’s coped in the face of her husband Derek Draper’s coronavirus battle.
Derek has been in hospital since March and was placed into a medically induced coma after contracting the virus. Nine months later, he still remains in hospital as he battles complications from Covid-19.
‘We all know what she’s been through and how extraordinary she has been and she will palm it off and say, “I just had to do it and there are other people doing more amazing things”,’ Ben said.
‘We are extraordinarily proud of you Kate and what you’ve managed to do and have a huge amount of admiration. And often look at ourselves and wonder how you manage to get through it and do it.’
‘I was absolutely flabbergasted and surprised,’ Kate responded. ‘It was very, very sweet.’
She added: ‘I feel like I’ve just been trying to get through. If it has been helpful then that’s lovely.
‘If you’ve lost someone due to Covid or lost someone for whatever reason, I think Christmas is very tough, so I’m lucky that Derek is still with us and we still have hope for next year.’
Earlier this week, Kate revealed she’s facing new ‘challenges’ with husband Derek while also sharing her recent fresh coronavirus scare.
It emerged that Kate and her two children Billy and Darcey were forced to self-isolate after being exposed to Covid-19 from a child in their school.
Upon her return, the presenter said: ‘A few challenges kicking off, challenges with Derek as there always are.
‘Also we had outside of Derek a little bit of a scare in the sense that the children had come into contact with somebody who, after coming into contact with them, tested positive for coronavirus.’
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
