As the third season of Race Across the World comes to a close, one team feels they can still win despite not leading in any leg.
This time, five teams have been travelling throughout Canada on a tight budget.
While the battle has been fairly equal among the pairs, father-daughter combination Ladi and Monique have yet to grab the lead at the end of any leg.
They have confidence, though, that all hope is not gone as the conclusion approaches.
Ladi, 52, is a sport and physical activity expert and consultant from Essex, and his daughter Monique, 25, is an events manager from East London.
The couple have discussed what winning the race would mean to them ahead of the series’ final episode, which airs this week.
‘I’m not going to lie, I’m here to win,’ Ladi said.
‘That’s why we enter these things. Winning the race will mark the end of an important life moment for me and my daughter, definitely.
‘As I said right at the beginning, I’m never going to get this time again with my daughter. We came into this competition to win it but overriding the win is just getting to the end and completing a mission that we started but more importantly, completing it with my daughter and having that time with her.’
That, he added, was the “most important” element of the experience.
Monique said that they were both’so competitive’ and that they ‘wouldn’t ever enter a tournament merely to complete it – we want to win, we want to aim for gold’.
In response to their lack of a win to yet, she stated that it was ‘far overdue’ for them to do so.
‘Like Dad said, getting to complete this journey and experience things that some people will never ever experience is so magnificent and so special,’ she said.
She added: So, whatever the outcome is – I’m so happy that I’ve done it with Dad.’
Ladi disclosed a few weeks ago that he was quietly in pain throughout the competition series due to a terrible injury.
He said that he feared he ‘overstretched my Achilles or something’ and had been left in ‘proper pain’.
Meanwhile, Monique was dealing with her own serious injuries after slashing her foot and needing stitches.
Doctors told her not to continue in the competition, but she stated withdrawing ‘wasn’t an option’.
Race Across the World airs Wednesday at 9pm on BBC One.
