Reckon you could take on Netflix’s All Of Us Are Dead? Here’s how you actually survive a zombie apocalypse

Iconic zombie movies like Train To Busan, Dawn of the Dead and Netflix’s new series All Of Us Are Dead might make surviving a zombie apocalypse look easy, but do you actually have the tools to make it IRL?

If you think all you need to do is ‘aim for the head’ whenever a walker comes charging at you, you’re onto a good start but there’s more. So. Much. More.

The early days of the C-word pandemic eerily felt like the start of a post-apocalyptic movie, with people desperately scavenging for food and toilet roll, and the roads desolate with everyone hiding indoors.

So it’s no surprise that many of us have considered how we’d actually survive if this were a zombie apocalypse.

According to Toolstation, there have been an average of 9,900 searches per month for ‘zombie apocalypse’ since December 2019, and ‘how to survive a zombie apocalypse’ has been searched for 880 times each month, on average.

So clearly, we’re all thinking it.

Well look no further as apocalypse expert Lewis Dartnell has shared his dos and don’ts of a zombie uprising; what equipment and tools you’ll need and how to maximise your chances of survival should the worst happen.

Steps to surviving a zombie apocalypse

Step 1: When the chaos kicks off, the first thing you’ll want to do is lay low. Make sure you are prepped with a few days’ worth of food and water and stay inside (we should be used to that – thanks, lockdown). It would be wise to blackout windows with bin liners and barricade doors or any other entry points.

Step 2: Plan your route out of your town or city, a crowded area is the last place you want to be, so getting out is necessary. Plan a route that avoids main roads and use the darkness of night to cover yourself. Try to stick to your route but be prepared to adapt if anything goes wrong.

Step 3: Find yourself a good set of wheels, ideally a sturdy 4×4 that can take some damage and handle off-road driving. You’ll also need to think about finding walkie talkies so you can communicate with your fellow survivors.

Step 4: So where’s your new home going to be? Unless you can find a nice property free of walkers, find a quiet, rural spot to settle down. Away from crowded areas, this is the perfect place to survive. Settle near clear, running water, find a place with a fireplace so you can use wood to keep warm and try to find somewhere with fertile ground so you can grow your own food.

Step 5: Think about defence, a wall surrounding your settlement combined with some floodlights is what you want. This keeps out any unwanted visitors and allows you to keep an eye on the surrounding area.

Step 6: Forgot your contactless card while fleeing home? Well, the world is now yours so scavenge what you need to survive. Keep an eye out for medication like antibiotics, iodine tablets can make water safe to drink, and supermarkets will contain canned food that will stay good for years after.

Step 7: Once settled, you can re-establish the infrastructure that you need. Establish an off-grid supply of electricity, this can be done via home-made wind turbines. Also, fuel can be made using rendered animal fat, allowing you to keep your vehicles running.

Who to survive a zombie apocalypse with

Ok, now the next section is important – it’s no good having all the right tools if the people you’re with are just going to drag you down.

However, these guys will have you taking down walkers like you’re Rick from The Walking Dead…

Natural Leaders: Having someone in the team who can lead and make decisions is a must, someone needs to keep morale up and organise your actions to make sure you effectively perform as a unit.

Carpenters/Metalworkers: Capable trade workers are essential when it comes to repairs and rebuilding as you need to be self-sufficient.

Electricians: Electricians can help you rebuild your infrastructure. Creating a settlement with self-sufficient electricity will improve your quality of life.

Doctors and Nurses: Another necessary addition to any team, these will help keep you in good health and although they may not have access to all the equipment they need, their medical knowledge is needed.

And with that you’re set! Let’s hope the world doesn’t become overrun with zombies but, on the off chance it does, we’ll see you at the safehouse.

It’s survival of the fittest after all, isn’t it?
