Richard Madeley makes U-turn after slating Love Island ahead of launch: ‘I surrender’

Richard Madeley has admitted surrender to Love Island – and who can really blame him?!

Last night, the 2022 series officially began, with islanders including Tasha Ghouri, Dami Hope, Indiya Polack and Andrew Le Page meeting and sussing each other out for the very first time.

The first episode was eventful to say the least, with the contestants finding out that their first partner of the show had been decided by the public, leaving some elated and others… decidedly less so.

On Tuesday’s Good Morning Britain, Madeley and Susanna Reid were joined by Richard Arnold to discuss their first impressions of the stars, and Richard couldn’t help but admit that he was transfixed.

‘I surrender. It is compelling,’ he said, as Reid agreed by saying: ‘Isn’t it?!’

Madeley continued, explaining that he has been vocal by speaking out about Love Island as of late, but couldn’t help but find his interest piqued.

‘I’ve been knocking it for the last week, it’s actually compelling stuff. I don’t know why! Cause it’s stupid. But it’s compelling,’ he confessed.

Arnold then made a cheeky joke that sparked laughter in the studio, quipping: ‘Well Love Island’s always had its knockers Dicky.’

Reid dubbed the reality dating show ‘pure entertainment’ saying: ‘I’m going to love this part of the morning while Love Island is on.’

‘Clearing and cancelling all my annual leave now,’ Arnold joked.

Madeley previously ridiculed Love Island ahead of its return, saying: ‘If there’s ever a good reason to join a queue out of the airport and get out of the country, that is it.’

As well as the twist that they wouldn’t be able to choose their own partners at the start of Love Island, the competitors – who are vying for a cash prize of £50,000 as well as potential suitors – were taken aback by the arrival of the first bombshell of the series, Davide Sanclimenti.

For Luca Bish, talk quickly turned to sex positions when he was getting to know Paige Thorne, while Indiya’s less-than-pleased reaction to being coupled up with Ikenna Ekwonna left viewers in hysterics.

Despite the chat between Gemma Owen and Liam Llewellyn quickly turning to football, the daughter of Michael Owen managed to avoid mentioning the identity of her famous father.

The dressage rider was later accused of being ‘rude’ by fans, when described Luca’s surname ‘unfortunate’ in a scathing exchange.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV. Love Island returns tonight at 9pm on ITV2 and ITV Hub.
