RuPaul’s Drag Race UK: Eliminated queen Anubis opens up about tearful moment with River Medway cut from episode 1

Anubis, the first eliminated queen from RuPaul’s Drag Race UK, has opened up about a tearful moment she shared with River Medway that was cut from episode 1, describing the queens in the cast as ‘so supportive’.

During Thursday’s episode of Drag Race UK on BBC Three, 19-year-old Anubis became the first queen to be told to sashay away by head judge RuPaul following the first runway challenge.

Anubis showcased ensembles inspired by her hometown Brighton and her love of sea creatures, before going up against Elektra Fence in the deciding lip sync.

Following her exit from the show, Anubis spoke to My Celebrity Life about the emotional moment in the episode when she revealed the significance of her second runway look, as it was inspired by a memory she shared with her late father.

The drag queen explained to the other queens in the Werk Room during Untucked that the last memory she has of her dad is going to an aquarium with him when she was 12 years old, four years before he died.

Speaking of the moment her fellow competitors ‘rallied’ around her, Anubis said: ‘Everyone has always been really supportive with me, which is something I’ve really, really admired from the other queens, because there’s a stigma sometimes with drag queens that everyone’s catty and bitchy and everyone fights all the time.

‘There’s always drama, and obviously with reality TV you’re going to get a bit of that regardless, ‘cause it is television. But we are also so supportive of each other and it’s amazing.’

While viewers saw River rush over to Anubis straight away when she opened up about their late father, Anubis recalled how they also shared a tearful moment together, as River could relate to suffering the loss of a parent.

‘When I opened up about that memory with my father and the connection it had to one of the outfits I wore for that challenge, I think everyone really rallied around me, especially River,’ Anubis said.

‘She recently lost her mum, which she spoke about earlier in the episode. So she ran over to me in Untucked, gave me a huge hug, and we had a little cry together. It was a really nice bonding moment for me and River. But all the girls are so lovely, so supportive. They’ve just been amazing, really amazing.’

Earlier on in the episode, River told Vanity Milan that her mother died from Covid-19, two weeks before she received the call to star on Drag Race UK.

River explained that her mum was ‘very supportive’ of her drag, buying her first pair of heels, trying wigs on with her and always sitting at the front at her gigs.

The drag queen brought one of her mum’s outfits to the competition, a two-piece brown ensemble she used to wear to work.

While River admitted that she was initially hesitant about competing so soon after her loss, she realised that she was doing so in her mum’s honour, as well as for the rest of her family.

RuPaul’s Drag Race UK returns next Thursday at 7pm on BBC Three.
