Ruth Langsford’s team have hit back at claims that she ‘took a swipe’ at Alison Hammond taking her spot on This Morning in a new interview.
It was reported this weekend that Ruth and husband Eamonn, who have been on This Morning since 2006, were being axed from their usual Friday morning spot and being replaced by Alison and Dermot O’Leary.
On Sunday, an interview with Mirror Notebook was released with Ruth talking about her career, during which she said: ‘We’ve put the work in. We didn’t do a reality show and get an overnight job on the telly.
‘We’ve come up through the ranks.’
It’s since been claimed that this appeared to be a swipe at Alison, who first came into the public eye thanks to Big Brother 3 in 2002.
But, speaking to Metro.co.uk, Ruth’s reps have debunked claims that Ruth and Eamonn’s This Morning co-star was the target of the comment – and it was made weeks before the recent news, making it more of a case of bad timing.
‘It has been rather taken out of context – as the interview was done more than five weeks ago and was absolutely not in reference to the recent articles at all,’ they told us.
‘She was simply making a general observation about the TV industry and the different routes into the business – illustrating the point that whereas some presenters launch their careers by being on other TV programmes first, her and Eamonn’s experience and career paths had taken a different and more traditional path.’
‘This wasn’t directed at anyone in particular – indeed she has always been supportive of a number of her professional colleagues and friends who have taken this route,’ the team continued.
‘Any suggestion that it is in reference to recent newspaper reports would be entirely wrong and categorically untrue.’
None of those involved – Ruth, Eamonn, Alison or Dermot – have publicly spoken about or confirmed the news as of yet.
Addressing the recent reports, a spokesperson for This Morning told Metro.co.uk: ‘We have a stellar presenting line up on This Morning in Holly and Phillip and Eamonn and Ruth.
‘Any additions to this line up will be announced in due course.’
This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV.
