The Sainsbury’s Christmas advert 2020 has been released, celebrating the sweet nostalgia that comes with indulging in delicious homemade food.
This year, rather than launch just one advert, Sainsbury’s is releasing three as part of its Christmas campaign, with all three centred around meals that stir up memories of home and family.
The first, called Gravy Song, features a father and daughter on the phone as they discuss the dad’s famous gravy, which he makes every year for Christmas.
As the father and daughter chat, a montage of Christmas memories is shown on screen, showing them cuddling on the sofa, family members opening presents and the dad joining in with his daughters as they dance in their kitchen.
It also depicts the dad making his signature gravy, prompting him to start singing his gravy song in the most cringey yet lovable dad-like manner possible.
‘Hey you, what’s going down, gravy boat, gravy boat, coming to town,’ he sings over the phone, as his embarrassed daughter begs him to stop.
But he continues, crooning: ‘It’s not any old ship, just take a sip, it’s filled with scrummy and saucy bits.’
Despite her protestations, after her father has finished singing, the daughter admits that her dad’s gravy is ‘pretty good, to be fair’.
‘And I just really want to be home for it,’ she adds, a sentiment many people will likely be able to relate to as they look forward to hopefully spending time with loved ones at Christmas.
After the daughter reveals her true feelings about her father’s gravy, he – excited to have squeezed the revelation out of her – responds: ‘So my gravy is the best?’
The first of Sainsbury’s three Christmas ads is set to air on TV for the first time during The Voice Final, which is showing on Saturday evening on ITV at 8.40pm.
The second ad, titled Perfect Portions, will be released on Monday 16 November, depicting a mother and son reminiscing about how the father in their family used to carve their Christmas turkey in the past.
The final short film, Big Sarnie, will then launch on Thursday 19 November, featuring a pair of cousins looking back on Boxing Days spent at their Nan’s house over the years, during which they’d be treated to her humongous turkey sandwiches.
Each of the three adverts comes with the tagline ‘Food is Home. Home is Christmas,’ a reminder of just how much those small moments at home with loved ones – including those at the dinner table – should be cherished.
Sainsbury’s hopes that the adverts in the supermarket’s festive campaign will reinforce the message that Christmas will be special this year no matter what, whether we’ll be able to come together with friends and family or have to stay apart.
‘We know that this year has been different for everyone, so we wanted to take a different approach with our Christmas campaign by simply reminding people that Christmas dishes are gestures of love and care, served up by those who matter most,’ said Emma Bisley, head of broadcast marketing at Sainsbury’s.
‘It’s our memories of these dishes, prepared by the people we love, that have the power to transport us home – whether we’re there or not.’
From Tuesday 1 December to Monday 14 December, Sainsbury’s is encouraging customers to donate cash, food and other essential items as part of its Brighten a Million Christmases initiative, with the retailer doubling every donation made.
