Sam Quek has jumped to the defence of her Question of Sport co-star Paddy McGuinness, praising his hosting skills after critics of the revamped show called for Sue Barker to return.

Earlier this year, Question of Sport returned with a brand new panel, with Top Gear star Paddy taking Sue’s place as host after she fronted the programme for 24 years.

Team captains Matt Dawson and Phil Tufnell were also replaced, with former field hockey player Sam and former rugby union player Ugo Monye joining the series.

After the first episode of the new Question of Sport aired, some viewers expressed their extreme disappointment over Sue’s absence, with several calling for her to make a comeback.

In a new interview, Sam addressed the backlash the show received when it returned with a new cast, saying that there was always going to be ‘massive comparisons’ to Sue, Matt and Phil ‘because they were world class at what they did’.

‘They were knowledgeable, they were funny, they were lovely,’ she said.

‘I think people don’t tend to like change, especially after 20 plus years. But can you imagine if we said, “Sorry only people who play sport are allowed to watch Question of Sport.”’

Sam continued, praising Paddy for making sport more ‘inclusive’ to viewers by hosting the quiz show.

‘Paddy has come in and hes opened it up to a new audience. Sport is for everyone. It should be inclusive,’ she said.

Sam is currently pregnant with her second child, having welcomed her first, a daughter called Molly Doris Mairs, in March 2021.

The Question of Sport star explained that she realised that she might be pregnant when she answered several questions wrong, explaining that it was ‘literally baby brain’.

The presenter was surprised to have become pregnant again so quickly, sharing her shock with her husband, property entrepreneur Tom Mairs, who she married in 2018.

In addition to Question of Sport, Paddy also stars in Top Gear, which is due to return in a few days’ time.

The recently-released trailer for the new series teased high-octane stunts, Paddy, Freddie Flintoff and Chris Harris taking on the brutal chilli challenge.

Question of Sport next airs tomorrow at 7.35pm on BBC One.
