Sex Education star Aimee Lou Wood has addressed the future of the hit Netflix series, revealing that she believes it’s ‘closer now to ending’ ahead of the release of season 4.

Last month, the third series of Sex Education launched on the streaming platform, reuniting fans with beloved characters including Otis (Asa Butterfield), Eric (Ncuti Gatwa), Maeve (Emma Mackey) and Aimee Gibbs (Aimee).

In the latest episodes, Aimee sought help from Otis’ mother Jean Milburn (Gillian Anderson) as she struggled to feel comfortable being intimate with her boyfriend after suffering a sexual assault in season two.

In the finale, the teenagers’ future at Moordale appeared to be up in the air as it was revealed that the school had been sold to developers.

Some fans have speculated how Sex Education could continue in subsequent seasons, with some predicting that it may follow the characters as they transition from secondary school to university.

During a recent interview, Aimee admitted that she could ‘do it forever’, but believes Sex Education could be nearing its end.

Speaking to RadioTimes.com, the actor was asked whether the show may draw to a close with season four.

‘I’m not sure because there’s a part of me that could just do it forever,’ she responded.

‘But there’s also a part of me that’s like, “No – we’ve all got to go and do different things and play different parts.”’

Aimee explained that it’s ‘a weird one’, describing the conundrum as ‘bittersweet’.

‘It’s a bittersweet thing because it probably is, even if it’s not this series, it probably is closer now to ending than it is to the start,’ she said.

However, she said that while it would be ‘sad’ for Sex Education to end’, it would also be ‘positive’ in other ways.

‘I always think leave them wanting more as well. Always leave them wanting more,’ she added.

At the end of season three, Aimee made the difficult decision to break up with her boyfriend Steve (Chris Jenks).

Meanwhile, just as it appeared that Otis and Maeve may get together, Maeve revealed that she’d been accepted onto an academic programme in America.

Sex Education is available to watch on Netflix.
