Sex Education’s Aimee Lou Wood admits character’s sexual assault ‘challenged her’

Aimee Lou Wood has spoken about her work on Sex Education, saying her character’s experience with sexual assault really challenger her.

Viewers of the hit Netflix comedy will know Aimee’s fan-favourite character Aimee Gibbs is dealing with the aftermath after she was sexually assaulted on a bus ride on her way to school back in season two.

Aimee was unable to make her usual trip to school, and season three follows her as she continues to feel the impact it made on her.

The actress has now spoken about her experiences, and stressed that it was ‘really important’ to do justice to the storyline as there would be young viewers who could relate to the scenes.

‘I knew that it meant it was going to mean a lot to a lot of people,’ Wood told us.

‘I felt very honoured to have been trusted with it but I [wanted to] make sure that I was telling the story through her,” the actress added.

‘She is such an individual and she has such an individual way of expressing herself and looking at the world, so it was a great acting challenge because I really want to express the importance and magnitude of this issue, but I also want to maintain that lovely Aimee-ness as well.’

Discussing the feedback she had received after season two arrived last year, Aimee said: ‘It’s just been a real kind of honour. It’s also just so amazing and moving to hear feedback from people and hear how much that storyline had an impact. It’s really, really special.’

Aimee previously spoke about the more light-hearted storylines of season three, stating that her character ‘becomes a feminist icon without having a f**king clue’.

Meanwhile, Sex Education star Aimee Lou Wood also recently joked she got all her sex scenes out the way in season one after saying she had less involvement in intimate scenes in more recent episodes.

Sex Education season 3 is available to stream on Netflix.
