Silent Witness star Amanda Burton admitted she was initially worried how her character may have changed ahead of a surprise comeback to the BBC series.

Silent Witness is soon set to return for a 25th anniversary series, consisting of six brand-new episodes following the groundbreaking work of the pathologists at The Lyell.

But fans have an extra special treat in store, as Amanda’s iconic character Dr Sam will finally be back on-screen after nearly two decades.

The actress, 65, jumped at the chance to return to the role but was ‘worried’ about how her character may have changed in the years since.

Speaking at a recent screening, she said: ‘I was a bit worried that it might have been one of those things where [she’d return as] some sort of “on your last legs” detective walking across a beach or wearing an old tweed coat… being hauled out of some sort of dementia, or whatever!’

But it was Sam’s proposed storyline that swayed her into returning.

‘The fact that she was very much active and have been working… that really made me want to come back,’ she added.

As cast and crew desperately tried to keep the news under wraps, Amanda’s return nearly ended up being leaked as they filmed in Liverpool in front of crowds of fans.

Producer Nick Lambon weighed in: ‘We were trying to keep Amanda’s involvement completely secret and suddenly 200 people turned up for three days to watch us filming and wandering around.

‘I don’t really know how BBC publicity managed to keep quiet!’

Turning to co-star Emilia Fox, Amanda added: ‘We were papped, but [the photos] didn’t really say anything very specific, it was very amusing.’

It was a quick decision for her to go back to her old stomping ground too.

Asked whether she deliberated much, she replied: ‘No, quite frankly. Emilia and I did a photo shoot together about four years ago, for the Radio Times and we were laughing about it, sort of “Yeah, right, that’s never gonna happen!”

‘I got a call and I was just completely blown away by it and very excited about the opportunity, it was so amazing.’

Alongside Emilia and Amanda, David Caves will return as Dr Jack Hodgson, and Genesis Lynea, who joined the cast last year, is back as pathologist Dr Simone Tyler.

Silent Witness returns later this month to BBC One.
