Silent Witness kicked off its 24th series last night on BBC One with an all-new episode, and it featured one of the stars of Harry Potter – Evanna Lynch.
While Liz Carr is notably absent this time around, fans of the long-running drama were surprised to see the film star in the cast.
Titled Redemption, the first part of a two-episode arc, last night’s broadcast saw Dr Nikki Alexander (Emilia Fox) having to face an old threat after a fight broke out in a prison.
An inmate was found dead, leading Nikki to suspect his cellmate, shooter Scott Weston (Elliott Tittensor) from season 13, was responsible.
But it was Scott’s girlfriend Paisley Robinson – who visits him in prison and advocates for his case review – that caught viewers’ attention as people recognised her as Harry Potter actress Evanna.
The actress, 30, made her screen debut in the fifth instalment of the fantasy series in 2007 at the age of 16, playing the eclectic Luna Lovegood.
While acting alongside Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint, Evanna was known as a talented witch with her head in the clouds.
In her latest role, she is much more grounded, but Silent Witness viewers were quick to recognise the actress and took to Twitter to share their excitement.
‘Is that Luna from the Harry Potter films?’ one fan enquired.
‘Hang on, wasn’t that Evanna Lynch just then?’ echoed another.
‘Luna Lovegood from Harry Potter in #SilentWitness,’ and ‘Luna from Harry Potter is in the first episode’ announced two more excited fans.
Another viewer then added: ‘Luna Lovegood, I recognise that sweet Irish accent from anywhere.’
Even at the end of the first episode of Silent Witness, Evanna’s role was a talking point, with one viewer tweeting: ‘Is anyone else still trying to process Luna Lovegood? It’s proper knocked me.’
The actress previously admitted that she thought her Harry Potter role meant her career was ‘set for life’ but she has been finding it really hard to continue her acting career after the saga ended in 2011.
‘I think I over blew it, I think I thought, “Great this is me set for life, this is my career,”‘ she said on the Talking Tastebuds podcast.
‘I didn’t think it would be as hard to be an actor as it actually is. And I noticed a lot of fans have that same reaction to me.
‘Sometimes I’ll meet them at conventions and at plays, and I’ll meet them after that and they’ll be like, “Why are not you doing blockbuster movies?” and I’m like, “Yeah, why am I not? I don’t know, I just didn’t feel like it, that’s all,”‘ she joked.
‘They have no concept of how cutthroat the industry is. But I wasn’t prepared for fame at the same time.’
Despite Evanna’s role being but a small part, it’s safe to assume that she will be back for the second half of the episode, airing tonight on BBC One.
While trying to prevent Scott from getting released on parole, Nikki enlists the help of his mother Pamela (Connie Walker), who also thought her son should serve his full sentence, and manages to get his hearing postponed after evidence of Scott’s involvement was found on the dead inmate’s body.
Silent Witness airs on Mondays and Tuesdays at 9pm on BBC One.
