Simon Cowell has confirmed plans for The X Factor to return as he insists there’s ‘no question’ the show will be back.

The ITV singing competition hasn’t been on air since 2019’s celebrity edition, and the music mogul has insisted while he made the rest decision to ‘rest’ the series, he’s keen on a comeback.

He told OK! magazine: ‘This year was the first year since we took it off the air, where I realised how much I’d really, really missed it.

‘And I think the public do as well. It was – and is – a brilliant show. And there’s no question it will return.’

He noted how production issues behind such a big show were behind the decision to take it off air, and he admitted ‘people were tired’.

He added: ‘I think we did the right thing in resting it, as it was a huge show to produce and I think people were tired.’

Fans had been convinced the show – which first launched in 2004 and has produced stars like Little Mix, Leona Lewis and One Direction – was gone for good, but he insisted that isn’t the case.

‘When it comes back – and it will – it will hopefully be a big event,’ he said.

Over summer, an ITV spokesperson said: ‘There are no current plans for the next series of The X Factor at this stage.’

Last year, ITV boss Kevin Lygo admitted the talent show wasn’t returning this year.

He said at the time: ‘It’s not definitely returning, it might return, and if it does the format will tweak.

‘I think people always talk about format changes. I know it was the most successful entertainment show for decades.

‘And you need to be wary of changes, we all think there were too many changes towards the end of the run, but I’m sure X Factor will be back at some stage and it’s really, “When is the right moment?”

‘Simon controls it more than we do. When does he want it to come back, how does he want to come back? Hopefully we can be part of it.’

The 62-year-old star is bringing new musical game show Walk The Line to ITV, while Britain’s Got Talent will start filming in January.
