Sir Michael Palin reveals how he got a cameo role in The Simpsons

Sir Michael Palin has revealed how he got a cameo role on The Simpsons.

Speaking to Jonathan Ross on his ITV chat show, the actor explained that he played the curator of a museum on the hit cartoon.

The comedy legend appeared in an episode that aired in the US on Fox earlier this month.

Explaining how he landed the role, Sir Michael began: ‘They just got in touch with me.

‘That was the great thing, to be asked by The Simpsons to come and do a voice. I’m playing a character, the curator of a museum.’

Jonathan then surprised Sir Michael with a first-look at his character, which he had never seen before.

‘That’s something amazingly wonderful,’ Sir Michael added.

In an interview in October, Sir Michael, who was knighted last year, compared his role on The Simpsons to visiting Buckingham Palace.

‘To be asked to do a sort of guest appearance on The Simpsons is pretty much like going to Buckingham Palace, except not quite as funny,’ he said.

‘It was lovely to be asked.’

Else where in the programme, the former Monty Python star spoke about his series Travels of a Lifetime where he met the Dalai Lama.

Recalling that iconic moment, Sir Michael continued: ‘He did say, “I would travel with you, I would carry your bags” and we had a few jokes about that.

‘He wasn’t very good, he kept dropping them… I think he would have loved Python, he had a great sense of humour and a great presence.’

‘Audiences come to see him, touch him, he’s absolutely revered, and still at the end of three hours of that he had time to talk to us and do an interview,’ he added.

‘He went up to the crew and shook hands with all members of the crew. People don’t generally do that. He was aware of all the people around. He was so jokey, we couldn’t use much of it. It was very nice and relaxed.’

The Jonathan Ross Show returns on Saturday at 9.30pm on ITV.
