Idris Elba undeniably has one of the sexiest voices ever, even when he’s Knuckles – a red anteater from Sonic.
Considering he was voted People’s sexiest man alive in 2018, we’re clearly not the only ones to think so.
But it turns out that while the whole world may know it, Idris doesn’t think his voice is that ‘sexy’ at all.
In fact, for some reason he thinks he sounds like ‘a market trader’.
Speaking to Loose Women Ruth Langsford and Kéllé Bryan ahead of the release of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 tomorrow, Idris admitted he doesn’t hear his own voice in quite the same way we do.
Ruth described his voice as ‘distinctive’, saying: ‘Everybody talks about this sexy voice, and I read somewhere that you didn’t want the voice of Knuckles to be sexy and yet people are still saying, despite that, it still is, you’ve made him sexy.’
The Luther star replied: ‘I’m baffled. I think I sound like a market trader from Canning Town.
‘”Get your fish here, £10″ that’s expensive fish’, he joked in his ‘market trader’ voice.
‘I don’t necessarily think my voice is sexy, and so I was desperate for my character to have a fish-out-of-water, not from here, and I put on this stern deep voice, I didn’t think it was sexy.
‘But hey, I’ll take the compliment.’
Hopefully we’ll get to hear even more of his voice, as although he’s still dominating red carpets as an actor, the 49-year-old has been making moves in music.
Having begun DJing at the age of 14 (a few years before his acting career started), Idris is looking to move towards music, after having had time to reassess his life during lockdown.
He said: ‘I love music a lot, it’s my happy place, I’m not giving up acting but I am going to put out more music, I just love the process of making music.’
Fans need not worry though, as he won’t be stepping back away from the film industry altogether.
‘I’m not giving up acting, but I’m certainly going to put out more music,’ he confirmed.
On turning 50 later this year, the actor added: ‘I am 50. Honestly, I can’t even believe it, I still feel like I’m 35, even though I don’t look it.’
Loose Women airs weekdays from 12.30pm on ITV.
