Sophie Ellis-Bextor was ‘rumbled very quickly’ by the judges on The Masked Singer.
The musician has a distinctive singing voice and made every effort to change it when she performed as Alien for the first time.
However some of the judges on the panel, made up of Rita Ora, Davina McCall, Jonathan Ross and newcomer Mo Gilligan, actually twigged it was Sophie in the disguise.
She explained that her children thought it was ‘hilarious’ that she attempted a different voice.
‘I kind of just thought, I’ve got to jump in with both feet really and play a game because it’s not really a singing competition. It’s an identity competition.
‘I suppose it’s a compliment, the fact that as soon as I opened my mouth even as the Alien my one year old, I literally don’t know how he did this, pointed and said “Mummy”, and then Richard, my husband, was watching on Twitter like, yeah, everybody is saying it’s you.’
‘I suppose in a way that’s lovely because it’s my day job and you want to have a recognisable voice as a singer. But I felt like ah, I thought I’d done quite a good job.’
Sophie went on: ‘They didn’t put it in the final edit actually, but three of the judges said my name as well on the day so I already knew I’ve been rumbled very quickly.’
When asked which of the other mystery contestants she thinks stood out, the Get Over You singer had her eye on one in particular.
‘In my pairing I was up against the Robin who I think was pretty flirty and charismatic. I quite like the Robin actually! Good performer.’
The runaway theory is that Robin is JLS member Aston Merrygold due to the clues we were given that appear to relate to his career.
The Masked Singer continues Saturday at 7pm on ITV.
