Comedy series Space Force has been renewed for a second season by Netflix, with Steve Carell returning to the helm.
Space Force, which was first launched on the streaming platform in May this year, follows a team of people as they work to create the sixth branch of the US Armed Forces, the Space Force, which was founded in December 2019 during Donald Trump’s presidency.
The show features The Office star Steve as the lead, playing General Mark R. Naird, the first ever chief of space operations in the unit.
The series marked the reunion of Steve and television comedy writer Greg Daniels, who worked together on the US version of The Office, which spanned from March 2005 until May 2013.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, production on the new season of Space Force will move from LA to Vancouver, in an effort to keep costs down.
While fans of the show may be excited about its return, it will likely be a while before it is released, with filming due to take place in 2021.
The first season of Space Force, which consisted of 10 episodes, sparked a mixed reaction among critics and viewers.
While the show received a 38 per cent rating from critics on review site Rotten Tomatoes, it received a far higher rating of 75 per cent among its audience.
Space Force boasts a star-studded cast, including John Malkovich as the chief scientist on the Space Force, Ben Schwartz as the military unit’s social media director and Lisa Kudrow as Mark’s wife, Maggie Naird.
During an interview with Collider earlier this year, co-creator Greg explained that they were able to write John’s part with him in mind, after he expressed interest in joining the project.
He added that Steve’s character in Space Force is basically the ‘opposite’ of his character Michael Scott from The Office, as Michael is ‘an incompetent and terrible leader’, while Mark is ‘all about being a great leader and a person of integrity’.
The first season of Space Force is available to watch on Netflix.
