The first look at ITV’s upcoming Stephen Lawrence drama Stephen has been revealed, showing Steve Coogan leading the fight for justice.
The actor and comedian plays DCI Clive Driscoll in the new three-part drama, taking charge of the investigation which saw two of Stephen’s killers convicted 18 years after his death.
He’s joined in the cast by Small Axe star Sharlene Whyte who plays Doreen Lawrence, with Hugh Quarshie playing Neville Lawrence.
The newly released clip shows the pair discussing the death of their son, before DCI Clive reveals that key new information has been found.
‘I gave you the names 13 years ago and nothing was done,’ Doreen says, before Neville adds: ‘When your son has been murdered, what does anything mean after that?’
‘Well you’ve waited a long time. We’ve found new evidence, implicating several of the suspects,’ DCI Clive says.
On April 22, 1993, aspiring architect Stephen was stabbed to death by a group of five white men who launched an unprovoked attack as he waited at a bus stop with a friend in Eltham, southeast London.
Two people were convicted over the murder, but Metropolitan Police Commissioner Cressida Dick has said it is a ‘matter of huge regret’ that the remaining suspects were not brought to justice.
The three-part ITV series will focus on the Lawrence family in the years after Stephen’s death.
The series ‘tells the story of the ongoing struggle by Doreen and Neville Lawrence to achieve justice and how a detective, DCI Clive Driscoll – working closely with the Lawrences – puts together an investigation that finally – more than 18 years after his death – secures the convictions of two of the gang who committed the murder of Stephen’.
Director Alrick Riley said: ‘Current events only highlight how relevant and important Stephen’s case remains. The case of Stephen Lawrence is a testament to the fortitude, persistence and determination of the Lawrence family.’
Stephen will arrive on ITV in the autumn.
