Stranger Things season 4: Millie Bobby Brown and Noah Schnapp shut down speculation surrounding Will’s sexuality

The fourth season of Stranger Things dropped less than a week ago, but fans are widely speculating and theorising in their droves about Will Byers’ sexuality.

Will Byers (Noah Schnapp), whose disappearance in the very first episode back in 2016 sparked the events of Stranger Things, has continued to have a rough time of it as the show has progressed, and he has struggled to reconnect with his best friends.

After following a trail apparently laid out during the latest batch of episodes released by Netflix, many fans and critics believe they have uncovered the reason why.

‘Will Byers is gay and struggling to come out’, Adam B. Vary wrote on Twitter. ‘Will Byers is gay and has a massive crush on Mike’, wrote another user.

But speaking to Variety magazine, Schnapp, 17, cooled the rumours down a little.

‘I feel like [the writers] never really address it or blatantly say how Will is’, he said.

‘I think that’s the beauty of it, that it’s just up to the audience’s interpretation – if it’s Will kind of just refusing to grow up and growing up slower than his friends, or if he is really gay.’

During the interview, the show’s breakout star Millie Bobby Brown, 18, who plays fan-favourite telekinetic teenager Eleven, was also keen to keep things ambiguous about Will’s sexuality.

‘Can I just say? It’s 2022 and we don’t have to label things’, Brown said.

‘I think what’s really nice about Will’s character is that he’s just a human being going through his own personal demons and issues,’ she continued.

‘So many kids out there don’t know, and that’s okay. That’s okay to not know. And that’s okay not to label things.’

However, other members of the sci-fi series’ cast have offered other interpretations on Will’s story that are more in keeping with the audience’s line of thinking.

‘If you’ve been watching the show, you should know that Will is not interested in El’, said Jim Hopper actor David Harbour, during a promotional video on Netflix Mexico’s Instagram.

‘He’s interested in someone else in the group. Will wants to be in the basement with Mike playing D&D for the rest of his life.’

Schnapp insisted, though, that Will’s story simply has a lot in common with ‘kids out there who don’t know what they’re going through growing up.’

‘Will is kind of like a zebra in a field of horses,’ said Schnapp. ‘He kind of stands out. It’s just nice to see that and have that shown on ‘Stranger Things’ for fans to connect to and be able to relate to. Because so many of our viewers are young kids who are at that stage in their life.’

Stranger Things season 4 is available to stream on Netflix now.
