Stranger Things star Gaten Matarazzo has delivered an update on how filming is going for season four of the 1980s-based sci-fi series, revealing how the coronavirus pandemic changed the way the show’s creators worked on the script.
It’s been two achingly long years since season three of Stranger Things was released on Netflix, with the teenage gang reeling from the latest Earth-shattering turn of events.
Last year, a teaser was released for season four revealing that Jim Hopper (David Harbour) is in fact still alive and being held in captivity in snowy Russia.
But how long will it be until we discover how Hopper got there and more importantly, whether he’s going to reunite with Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), who – like everyone else – believes he’s dead?
During a recent interview, Gaten, who plays the lovable Dustin Henderson in the supernatural drama, explained that usually, creators the Duffer brothers finish writing each season while they’re still being filmed, ‘panic-writing’ to ensure the scripts are done on time.
The 18-year-old said that while often ‘their best work’ comes about as a result of this accidental way of working, over the past year because of the pandemic, there was ‘no excuse for them not to have the [season] written completely]’.

When the coronavirus outbreak put a pause on filming, Matt and Ross Duffer were able to complete the season past the six or so episodes they’d already written, Gaten told Collider.
And now that the series is back on track, do we have a sense on when filming will be wrapped up?
‘There’s very few dates that are reliable. It really is more of a guesstimation on when we’re gonna be filming next, when we’re gonna be wrapping up, when release is gonna be, all that jazz because we still don’t know on day-to-day if we’re gonna be filming next week,’ Gaten stated.
‘I should be filming like next month for a bigger chunk than I’ve had in a bit, but even though it’s coming up in about two weeks from now, I still don’t know an exact date.
‘So because of that, there’s really no way to figure out when we’re gonna be wrapping.’
So basically, we don’t have an answer yet on when season four is going to be coming out.
But, as the age-old adage goes, we’re sure it’ll be worth the wait.
