In the launch show, which aired on Saturday, the annual Strictly pairing ritual took place and we got to see a stunning performance by MNEK.
Olympic boxer Nicola, who only agreed to do the series if she was partnered with a woman, told hosts Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman that she ‘can’t wait to set fire to the dance floor’.
Tess and Claudia revealed the pairings throughout the night, but the one that viewers are ‘buzzing’ to see is Nicola and Katya.
Speaking about making show history and being partnered with Katya, Nicola explained: ‘I want people to see my personality and my fun side.
‘I want to set fire to the dance floor and bust some moves.’
‘It’s never been done before on Strictly, so we are free to do what we want,’ Katya added.
‘There are no set rules, I am going to play around with it and I can’t wait.’
Viewers were delighted to see Nicola and Katya paired up, taking to Twitter one commented: ‘I’m glad there’s finally a same-sex couple on Strictly, rooting for Nicola and Katya.’
While another tweeted: ‘I’m properly chuffed to have a same-sex couple on strict. It is hugely overdue but I’m very happy that it’s finally happened. All the best to Nicola and Katya.’
One added: ‘Officially a same-sex partnership! So ready for this! Buzzing to see Nicola and Katya.’
