Strictly 2020: Viewers emotional as final provides ‘escapism bliss’ amid lockdown news

Strictly Come Dancing viewers had an emotional evening as stricter lockdown restrictions threatening Christmas were put in place just minutes before the final.

The show has had a troubled relationship with lockdown this year, with it even being uncertain that the show could go ahead at times.

However, on the night of the final, viewers took to social media to thank everyone involved in the making of the series- and admit that even the opening credits left them in tears.

Tess Daley opened the show acknowledging the news, saying: ‘If ever people needed cheering up, it’s now. After another tough day, we are going to try our very best to keep you entertained with another unforgettable night of dance.’

For some on Twitter, it was all a bit much.

The final saw Made In Chelsea star Jamie Laing, EastEnders actress Maisie Smith, comedian Bill Bailey, and popstar HRVY compete to win the coveted glitterball trophy.

Bill, HRVY and Maisie sailed through from the semi-final, though Jamie had to beat Good Morning Britain star Ranvir Singh in the dance-off to earn his spot in the final four.

Strictly Come Dancing is available for catch-up on BBC iPlayer.
