Strictly Come Dancing viewers got a tad ‘choked up’ during the opening number of the 2020 series.

On Saturday night’s launch show, which saw the annual Strictly pairing ritual take place, the professional dancers opened the show with a moving routine to Rozalla’s Everybody’s Free.

The performance began with Oti Mabuse and Karen Hauer dancing together on a beautiful beach, dressed in floaty white and light blue gowns.

The other dancing pros can also be seen dancing in the countryside and down a cobbled back street.

They then cut to the studio where they finished the routine on the Strictly dancefloor.

Some viewers admitted to getting emotional while watching their performance, while others branded it ‘poignant’ as it marked a sign of hope after the year we have had so far.

One viewer tweeted: ‘Wow I didn’t realise how much I needed Strictly back I’m already nearly crying at this opening scene.’

While another said: ‘The opening number has made everything ok again.’

One added: ‘This was a really poignant opening – this show is entertainment, escapism and a promise of the future.’

‘The nation needed that tonight… Brilliant opening show and a great line-up,’ another commented.

Hosts Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman revealed the celebrity and professional pairings throughout the show – and the first three to be revealed were Clara Amfo and Aljaž Skorjanec, Ranvir Singh and Giovanni Pernice, along with Caroline Quentin and Johannes Radebe.

HRVY is partnered with Janette Manrara, while Jason Bell is paired with Luba Mushtuk and Jamie Laing with Karen Hauer.

Next up was boxer Nicola Adams, who has made show history by being paired with Katya Jones, Jacqui Smith is paired with Anton Du Beke and EastEnders star Maisie Smith with Gorka Marquez.

JJ Chalmers is partnered with Amy Dowden, Bill Bailey with Oti Mabuse and finally, Max George is paired with Dianne Buswell.
