The Bake Off legend is part of the BBC One show’s first ever all-male couple – only the second ever same-sex partnership, following Nicola Adams and Katya Jones last year.
John joins a stellar Strictly line-up, including Tom Fletcher and Judi Love, and we can’t wait to see how he fares.
‘I am so excited!’ he said of his Strictly journey, which saw him rock a brand new hair do. ‘I’m very, very nervous. I’m actually shaking inside.
‘I was born to be on that dancefloor. I’m going to have to be taken off kicking and screaming every week.’
So, who is John, when was he on Bake Off, and who is he dating?
Who is Strictly star John Whaite?
He won the series, kicking off his career as a TV chef and cookbook author.
From then on, he’s appeared on daytime shows like Lorraine, securing his own weekly slot the show.
He’s also appeared on This Morning, What’s Cooking?, The Alan Titchmarsh Show and Sunday Brunch as a guest chef, and secured another regular spot on Steph’s Packed Lunch.
John is also a presenter in his own right, hosting ITV’s cooking show Chopping Block, which aired in 2016 and 2017, alongside Rosemary Shrager.
As well as his TV work, John has released his four cookery books and has his own cooking school – John Whaite’s Kitchen.
The Kitchen opened in January 2016 and is located on John’s family’s farm in Wrightington, Lancashire, in a 400-year-old barn.
Not only does it offer cookery classes to individuals and groups, but it also hosts supper clubs and private dining.
When did John Whaite win The Great British Bake Off?
John appeared on Bake Off in the third series in 2012.
He won, beating fellow finalists Brendan Lynch and James Morton, but he only ever won Star Baker once.
The star even had a complete disaster on the show when he decided to bake some delicious Rum Babas.
However, he mistakenly used salt instead of sugar with Mary Berry refusing to try them and Paul Hollywood spitting them out.
Despite that, he won the judges over, winning with his Italian sausage and roasted vegetable pithivier, fondant fancies and heaven and hell chiffon cake.
Is John Whaite married?
He’s not married yet (that we know of), but John is engaged to his long-term partner.
John and graphic designer fiancé Paul Atkins are believed to live together in Leeds.
It’s been reported that they met in Manchester in 2008, just a few years before John joined Bake Off and his career took off.
They appeared on the cover of Attitude magazine in 2014, where they talked about their desire for a ‘low key’ wedding in future, saying they’d like to wed in an English country house.
In July 2017, the couple decided to get engaged, but no word on a wedding date just yet.
Not much else is known about their relationship, but John does occasionally share selfies with Paul on his Instagram page.
Who is John Whaite’s Strictly partner?
South African pro Johannes Radebe is John’s dancing partner.
The 34-year-old dancer and choreographer first joined the UK version of Strictly in 2018, having previously starred on South Africa’s version.
He penned a first-person piece about how dancing in heels on the show was his way of coming out as gay for Metro.co.uk.
In 2019, he was paired with Corrie’s Catherine Tyldesley and danced with Caroline Quentin for the 2020 series.
Johannes and John’s historic partnership seems to be going well so far – despite a few stressful moments.
Speaking on Steph’s Packed Lunch in September, the duo revealed they’d had a few tiffs during initial training.
John revealed he was finding the steps stressful, to which he joked: ‘I think [Johannes] realised he needed to feed me some Haribo, or put me in a cab and send me home.’
The beloved baker also said he’d had a few tears as he tried to memorise his first routine.
Earlier this month, John spoke about the significance of an all-male partnership, saying: ‘It’s an honour. When they asked me if I’d be interested, I bit their hand off.
‘I thought to represent the LGBTQ+ community is one thing. But to see two men dancing together, it’s not necessarily about sexuality.
‘It’s just about intimacy and respect, and I think that’s going to be a great thing in our culture where men are conditioned not to open up and not to be emotional.
‘I think it might help to combat that. I’m excited on so many levels.’
Strictly Come Dancing 2021 airs on BBC One on Saturdays, from Saturday September 25 at 7.45pm
