Strictly Come Dancing 2020: Fans praise ‘best opening dance ever’ as Johannes Radebe ‘steals the show’ with Priscilla tribute

Strictly Come Dancing have applauded what has been described as ‘one of the best opening dances ever’ as professional dancer Johannes Radebe tore up the dancefloor during a tribute to musical Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.

This week on Strictly, the remaining couples are performing dance routines inspired by famous musicals, including Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Everybody’s Talking About Jamie.

The show opened with a spectacular group number by the professional dancers, which was filmed while they were in a bubble before the latest series launched.

Before tonight’s show began, Strictly Come Dancing shared a sneak peek at the routine, featuring Johannes and fellow professional dancers Gorka Marquez and Giovanni Pernice dressed in drag in ruffled 1970s-style outfits, complete with heels, rainbow-patterned fans and stunning make-up.

And now that we have seen the routine in full… we’re in an even greater state of awe.

After raising the roof while performing choreography to Cece Peniston’s Finally, the music then transitioned to Peaches & Herb’s Shake Your Groove Thing.

In a truly show-stopping moment, Johannes, Gorka and Giovanni’s trousers were ripped away to reveal tasseled mini skirts underneath.

Partnering with Aljaž Škorjanec on the dancefloor, Johannes and the rest of the dancers finished off the routine with flair and incredible talent, impressing viewers across the nation.

Numerous Strictly fans praised the routine, in addition to highlighting Johannes’ starring moment.

‘Johannes has just stolen the show, that’s all, goodnight,’ one person said.

‘Wow! One of the best opening dances ever!!!’ another remarked.

Several people also celebrated the fact that the routine paid tribute to Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, with one person stating: ‘I could watch an entire hour of Johannes, Gio and Gorka doing a Priscilla tribute!’

Last year, Johannes cemented his place as a Strictly legend when he led a red carpet-inspired routine, conquering the dancefloor in high heels.

Dancing to David Bowie’s Fame, Johannes was accompanied by two backing dancers who performed mesmerising death drops, much to the amazement of the Strictly audience.

The Strictly Come Dancing results show returns on Sunday night at 7.30pm on BBC One.
